Moving from NYC to Rockland or Westchester

Work through these in order. Questions along the way? Call or text me.

Before you start looking

  • Check your lease end date and the notice your landlord needs.
  • Talk to a lender and get pre-approved.
  • Write down your commute: where you work, how often you go in, and how long you're willing to travel.
  • List what you need in a home and what you'd like to have.
  • Pick three to five towns to look at first.

While you're house hunting

  • Ride the commute from each town once at rush hour.
  • Ask for the property tax bill on any home you're serious about.
  • Confirm the school district for each address with the district office.
  • Find out whether the house has public water and sewer, or a well and septic.
  • Choose a real estate attorney.

After your offer is accepted

  • Schedule the home inspection and any other tests.
  • Get homeowners insurance quotes.
  • Book movers early, especially for summer or the end of a month.
  • Ask your building about elevator reservations and certificate of insurance requirements for movers.

Before and after moving day

  • Set up electric, gas or oil, water, internet and trash pickup.
  • Change your address with USPS, your bank and your employer.
  • Look into station parking permits and monthly train or bus passes.
  • Update your driver's license and car registration with your new address.
  • Register to vote at your new address.
